TIMBER
Variation in colour
All trees are different in colour, form and grain. Colour differences will usually become less visible over time and a consistent tone colour will set.
Swelling & Shrinkage
Shrinking and swelling occur as the wood changes moisture content in response to daily as well as seasonal changes in the relative humidity of the atmosphere, i.e., when the air is humid, wood adsorbs moisture and swells; when the air is dry, wood loses moisture and shrinks.
Knots/Spotting
The appearance of knots in sawn wood and veneer is caused by grain deviation to accommodate the wood found inside the branches of trees. As the tree grows taller, the crown shades older and lower branches so they tend to die off and are subsumed by the increasing girth of the trunk
Resin
When a tree is alive, sap is the tree’s lifeblood that carries nutrition from the roots to all areas of the tree, through its network of trunk and branches. When the tree has been cut, the sap is no longer needed and kiln drying the wood will result in the substance becoming crystalised, forming a resin.
Cleaning and painting of timber products
Some of our timber products are pressure treated to provide an extra barrier from insects and all types of decay, rot. They do not require any additional treatment throughout their service life, however, should you wish to stain or paint our timber products, our advice is to buy the best coatings you can afford.
It is advised that you follow these guidelines below:
- Use a microporous finish that allows the timber to breathe
- Thin down the first coat of finish and allow it to dry
- Build up the finish with three or four full coats depending on the depth of the finish required
- Read and follow the manufacturers’ instructions on the tin
- Please remember, you will most likely not achieve an exact gloss finish/colour finish. Our timber is selected and treated for outdoor use in harsh conditions
